How to Care for Hardwood Floors in the Desert (Inland Empire Edition)

By Monteros Hardwood Flooring 4 min read
Well-maintained hardwood kitchen floor in an Inland Empire home

Hardwood was made for forests. We installed it in the desert. Here's how to keep it happy.

The two enemies

Wide humidity swings. A typical Inland Empire summer day pushes attic and indoor humidity below 25%. Winter rain can swing it up briefly. Wood expands and contracts with humidity, and big swings are what cause cupping, gapping, and squeaks.

Direct sun. Our south-facing rooms get more UV than just about anywhere. Stain fades. Boards in the sun shift faster than boards under a rug.

What to do

Keep indoor humidity in a 35 – 55% band, year-round. A whole-house humidifier on the HVAC is the single best move. Standalone room humidifiers help in winter; AC alone usually keeps summer in range. Cheap hygrometers tell you where you are - buy two and put one in your living room.

Use rugs in direct-sun rooms. Move them every few months so the unrugged areas catch up on UV exposure. Otherwise you get a permanent rug-shaped color difference when you eventually move it.

Clean with the right product. Skip Murphy's Oil Soap, vinegar, and steam mops - all three damage modern polyurethane finishes. Use a hardwood-specific cleaner (Bona is widely available and works fine) and a microfiber pad. Spray on the pad, not the floor.

Damp mop, never wet. Standing water is the enemy of every wood floor, no matter the finish.

Felt pads under furniture. Replace every 6 – 12 months. Worn felt collects grit and turns chair legs into sandpaper.

Walk-off mats at every entry. Most floor scratches come from grit tracked in. A 4-foot mat at the front door catches 80% of it.

What to avoid

  • Steam mops - they drive water and heat into the seams.
  • Spray-and-walk-away polish products - they build up and cloud the finish over time.
  • Robot vacuums with rotating brushes - fine for dust but they can drag grit. Use the soft-roller models.
  • Wet pet bowls without a tray - chronic water on hardwood is how cupping starts.

When to call us

If you see early cupping, gapping wider than a dime, or a finish that's scratched through to bare wood - call before the damage spreads. Most issues caught early are repairable. Wait too long and you're looking at full refinish or board replacement.
